“The rules of soccer are very simple, basically it is this: if it moves, kick it. If it doesn’t move, kick it until it does.”
Our first soccer game was Monday night…we play in the York Region Soccer League, the Women’s Elite division. Our game field is in Stoufville, which is an awful long way to drive from Toronto but since the games are at 9pm, it means there’s no traffic going there or coming back…just lots of bugs to contend with.
Our team is very skilled and we play great soccer…our downfall is that our average age is 35 whereas every team that we play has an average age of 22…if that! We’re usually lucky if we have 2 or 3 subs, other teams have a second squad on the bench. Oh and did I mention we’re older so not as fast as them…yeah that usually catches up to us, especially in the first few games of the season where most of us haven’t been training.
For the past two years our first games were disastrous, with us losing by 4 or 5 goals. This year no one said anything as we didn’t want to jinx it. We have a couple new players on the team so the first game takes us a bit to get organized and to figure out how to play with one another. This game however, started off great. We were passing the ball well, moving off the ball, creating great changes. In the first 15 minutes we were 1-0 up, had a goal called back because of an off-side and had a couple of other great opportunities. The first half an hour in fact was a pleasure to play…and then we started getting tired…we made substitutions and they came back and tied it at 1-1 in the last 5 minutes. Luckily we were able to get another goal before the half so we were at 2-1 at the end of the first 45 minutes.
The second half was more like a pong game than a soccer game. We unfortunately handed them a few goals…they tied it at 2-2, we scored to make it 3-2 for us, they tied it again 3-3, we scored again 4-3 for us, one more..and thank God…5-3 for us, 5-4 at the end…let’s just say that the second half seemed like it went on forever and we were glad to hear the final whistle go and to take the 3 points.
I love playing soccer, it doesn’t seem like exercise at all yet I’m sure I ran a good 8-10km during the game. With all the training I was doing, I was definitely not 90 minutes fit…but I’m sure I’ll get there shortly. I however never stretched, it’s too hard to stretch when you’re having beers after the game 🙂
Next game is on Sunday…
